An ex-convict, identified as Ademola Omokinwa, has been arrested by the Ondo State Police Command for allegedly beating his lover, Joy Jimoh, to death following a disagreement over a ₦100,000 debt.
The tragic incident reportedly occurred in Idanre, a quiet town in the state, after the deceased confronted Omokinwa, demanding repayment of the money she had lent him. The confrontation, according to police sources, degenerated into a heated argument that turned violent.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Olayinka Ayanlade, said the matter was brought to the attention of the police by a neighbour, Ngozi Gregory, who raised the alarm after witnessing the altercation.
> “The report indicated that during the quarrel, the suspect became aggressive and assaulted the victim repeatedly until she collapsed. She was immediately rushed to the hospital but was confirmed dead by a medical practitioner,” Ayanlade said.
He further disclosed that the body of the deceased has been deposited at the mortuary for post-mortem examination, while detectives have commenced a full-scale investigation into the matter.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, according to Ayanlade, has ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) to ensure a discreet and comprehensive probe.
Residents of Idanre have since been thrown into mourning, expressing shock over what they described as a “needless and heart-wrenching” tragedy.
The police have assured the public that justice will be served, reaffirming their commitment to curbing domestic violence and bringing perpetrators to book.
