DSS Arrests Man Over Social Media Call For Military Coup

The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a man identified as Innocent Chukwuma in Oyigbo, Rivers State, for allegedly using his social media platform to call for a military takeover of the Nigerian government.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed the arrest on Wednesday via his verified X handle, stating that DSS operatives traced and apprehended Chukwuma after monitoring his online activities. The suspect was said to have used his X account, @TheAgroman, to post messages encouraging the military to overthrow the current administration.

In one of his controversial posts, Chukwuma reportedly urged the military to “reset the country” and called on Nigerians to support such an action. The statements, deemed seditious by authorities, were flagged for inciting a breach of national security.

Makama noted that the secret police acted swiftly after tracking the account’s digital footprint to Oyigbo, where the suspect was picked up and taken into custody for questioning.

A source familiar with the investigation told Punch that Chukwuma was cooperating with DSS investigators as they probe the motive and network behind his social media activities.

As of the time of filing this report, the DSS had yet to release an official statement or confirm whether formal charges would be filed against the suspect. Meanwhile, the X account in question has been suspended for violating the platform’s community guidelines.

The arrest comes amid growing concerns over the misuse of social media to spread incitement, with security agencies reiterating their commitment to maintaining stability and safeguarding democratic governance.
