The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has refuted reports linking it to any ongoing strike action in the nation’s universities, insisting that it remains committed to academic stability and constructive dialogue with government authorities.
In a statement released on Monday and signed by its National President, Dr Niyi Sunmonu, the union described the social media reports suggesting its participation in the industrial action as misleading and unfounded.
“CONUA wishes to categorically clarify that it has not declared any strike action and is not part of any ongoing strike,” the statement read in part.
Dr Sunmonu reaffirmed the union’s position on promoting excellence and ensuring the uninterrupted academic calendar through continuous engagement with the Federal Government and other relevant stakeholders.
He noted that the union had earlier expressed dissatisfaction over its exclusion from the renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement but confirmed that the matter had since been resolved amicably.
According to him, the protest led to a meeting with the Minister of Education on 11 September 2025, where assurances were given that the Yayale Ahmed Renegotiation Committee would be expanded to accommodate all academic unions — a promise the ministry has now fulfilled.
“The Ministry of Education has acted in good faith by expanding the committee, and none of our issues with the government has become a matter of dispute,” Sunmonu stated.
He revealed that after a series of nationwide congresses held between 18 and 24 September, CONUA members unanimously resolved not to embark on any strike, preferring dialogue over disruption.
Dr Sunmonu further urged members to continue discharging their academic and administrative responsibilities with diligence, while also calling on university managements to guarantee the safety of CONUA members on campuses.
He appealed to students to remain focused on their studies, assuring them that CONUA would continue to uphold the values of quality education, industrial harmony, and national development.
