Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has debunked claims by the All Progressives Congress (APC) that he is protecting the Commander of the Osun Amotekun Corps, Adekunle Omoyele, who is reportedly wanted by the police over the killing of residents in Akinlalu community.
The opposition party had alleged that the Amotekun chief was being harboured within the Government House to evade arrest, accusing the governor of obstructing justice in a matter that has drawn nationwide outrage.
In a statement issued by the APC spokesperson, Kola Olabisi, the party described the governor’s alleged action as “condemnable, irresponsible, wicked, and unpatriotic.”
Olabisi challenged the governor to demonstrate sincerity by assisting security operatives in ensuring that Omoyele is handed over for questioning.
“If the reports circulating in Osogbo are anything to go by—that Omoyele, a prime suspect in the Akinlalu killings, has been hiding in the Government House to avoid arrest—then Governor Adeleke must take full responsibility. As a self-acclaimed believer in the rule of law, he should immediately hand over the Amotekun commander to the police to aid a thorough investigation into the Akinlalu tragedy that has become a national embarrassment,” Olabisi said.
But in a swift rebuttal, the governor, through his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, dismissed the allegations as “baseless political propaganda” by a party struggling to remain relevant in Osun politics.
Rasheed said the Adeleke administration has absolute faith in the ongoing police investigation, stressing that the government would not interfere in the legal process.
“The Akinlalu issue is a matter of law and order, and the Inspector-General of Police is already handling it. The police are conducting an active investigation, and our government will not intervene or interfere,” the statement read.
Governor Adeleke also cautioned residents and political actors against politicising the tragedy, urging the public to allow due process to take its course.
“The opposition’s allegations are unfounded and baseless. The Osun APC, lacking in direction and purpose, has become a habitual purveyor of fake news,” he added.
