Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has announced plans to roll out an Electric Vehicle (EV) transport scheme, christened the Abia Green Shuttle Service, before the end of the year as part of efforts to transform the state’s public transportation landscape and embrace sustainable energy solutions.
According to a statement signed on Saturday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, the initiative marks a major step in the state’s commitment to modernising its transport infrastructure and aligning with global trends on environmental sustainability.
“The Abia Green Shuttle Service is part of Governor Otti’s forward-looking vision for a modern and eco-friendly transport system, in line with climate action and environmental goals,” the statement read.
Njoku explained that the initiative underscores the Otti administration’s resolve to phase out reliance on petrol, diesel, and compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles in favour of cleaner, renewable energy.
He disclosed that the state government had already procured 20 electric buses, which will form the first batch of the planned 100 units to ply major routes across Aba, Umuahia and Ohafia. Ten EV charging stations equipped with disability-friendly facilities are also nearing completion.
“The first batch will be operational before the end of the year, while another set of 20 buses with 10 additional charging points will arrive early next year,” he added.
The statement further noted that modern bus terminals are being constructed in Aba and Umuahia, alongside route mapping to ensure efficiency and commuter convenience.
Njoku revealed that the transport system would be powered primarily by renewable energy sources, adding that it would help reduce dependence on grid electricity.
“The system will utilise solar energy and battery storage solutions to ensure reliability and sustainability,” he said.
Beyond environmental benefits, the government emphasised that the project would contribute to improved road safety, job creation and economic expansion across the state.
“The initiative will enhance road safety through designated bus stops, create employment opportunities and stimulate Abia’s economic growth,” the statement concluded.
Describing the Green Shuttle Service as a “milestone” in the state’s development trajectory, Njoku said Governor Otti’s administration remains resolute in its drive to build a modern, cleaner and more inclusive transport system for Abians.
“This project demonstrates Governor Otti’s firm commitment to sustainable development, better mobility and an improved quality of life for all citizens,” he added.
