Former Your View host and Managing Director of TVC Entertainment, Morayo Afolabi-Brown, has explained why she openly supported President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 elections, citing personal history and a calculated career opportunity.
Speaking on the With Chude podcast hosted by Chude Jideonwo, Afolabi-Brown revealed that her family’s long-standing relationship with Tinubu influenced her decision.
“My father, a former Nigerian Bar Association president and human rights activist, was very ill at a time. Then-Governor Bola Tinubu stood by my mother, helped with medical bills, and supported my family. He also guided my brother in politics. He stood with us,” she said.
She stressed, however, that her career at TVC was earned on merit and not through Tinubu’s influence.
On why she joined his 2023 campaign, Afolabi-Brown said it was a personal choice.
“I got a letter from the women’s arm of the campaign saying I’d been selected to work. I could have said no, but I believed in his candidacy. I wanted to support him openly. It’s not every day you get to work closely with a campaign’s media team, so I took the job,” she explained.
She admitted she initially weighed the public perception risk but likened her decision to Oprah Winfrey’s endorsement of Barack Obama.
Afolabi-Brown acknowledged criticism about her neutrality as a journalist but dismissed claims of bias.
“The perception is always reality, but the truth is that TVC is probably one of the most objective stations,” she said.
The veteran broadcaster also reflected on her exit from Your View on August 29 after 12 years, expressing pride in the show’s impact.
“We marked 12 years in May, and I’m proud of the work the team has done. I love that many others have replicated the format,” she added.
