United States President, Donald Trump, has called for the death penalty for the suspect accused of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
The 31-year-old Kirk, a father of two, was gunned down on Wednesday when a lone shooter fired across the campus of Utah Valley University with a hunting rifle. His death sparked widespread outrage across the country.
After a two-day manhunt, authorities arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, who was reportedly handed over by his father, Matt. According to law enforcement, Robinson confessed his involvement after his father pressed him for answers. The elder Robinson then sought counsel from a clergyman, who advised him to alert the Utah County Sheriff’s Office. Robinson was later apprehended by US Marshals at about 10pm local time.
Speaking during a live interview on Fox TV, Trump said he expected the suspect to face the full weight of the law.
“He’s going to be found guilty, I imagine. And I hope he gets the death penalty,” the President said.
He further described Kirk as “the finest person,” adding, “He didn’t deserve this. He worked so hard, and so well. Everybody liked him.”
