The Lagos State Police Command has uncovered what it described as a fraudulent scheme orchestrated by one Engr. Chibuike Azubike, who allegedly paraded himself as the “Obi of Lagos”.
Azubike was picked up earlier in the week following intelligence reports suggesting plans to unveil a purported N1.5 billion palace in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos, on Saturday, September 13. The planned event, billed to hold at Apple Hall, was said to have attracted invitations to prominent figures and unsuspecting members of the public.
In a statement issued late Thursday, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, revealed that preliminary investigations showed the suspect was neither an engineer nor a traditional ruler.
“Findings confirmed that Mr. Azubike is not a qualified engineer as he claimed. He only supplies building materials to construction companies,” the police spokesman said.
According to him, the so-called palace project was a fabrication designed to fleece unsuspecting Nigerians. “It was a carefully crafted ploy to lure wealthy individuals and institutions into parting with their hard-earned money,” Oluseyi explained.
The police further clarified that the suspect acted alone and had no recognition or endorsement from any legitimate traditional authority in Lagos.
Members of the public were urged to disregard the claims, which the command described as an attempt to sow disunity and confusion among Lagosians.
Investigation is still ongoing, and all those found culpable will face prosecution in court,” the statement concluded.
