There was tension in Abuja on Sunday when a decomposed body was discovered inside a parked car at the annex gate of the National Assembly complex.
The deceased, identified as 55-year-old Gaddafi Iwar, a Tiv man believed to be a casual labourer at a construction site within the complex, was found dead in a red Peugeot 406 with registration number BWR-577 BF.
Security operatives said the car had been left in the same position for several days before its discovery around 9:00 a.m. on September 7, raising fears among staff and visitors.
Sources disclosed that the body was first moved to the National Assembly Clinic for confirmation, but when transferred to Asokoro General Hospital, officials reportedly declined to accept it due to the advanced stage of decomposition.
Community leaders later conveyed the corpse to Gbawu village, a border community between the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) and Kuje Area Council, where burial was carried out to forestall health risks.
The incident has stirred serious concern about security and public safety within the heavily guarded National Assembly, where vehicles and individuals are usually subjected to strict checks before entry.
As of press time, both the management of the National Assembly and the Federal Capital Territory Police Command, through its spokesperson Josephine Adeh, had yet to issue any official reaction to the development.
