The Ondo State Government has suspended three senior officials of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) for allegedly masterminding a recruitment scam in the state.
The affected officers—two directors and a deputy director—were placed on suspension on the orders of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, pending the outcome of ongoing investigations.
Reports indicated that the officials allegedly connived with outsiders to issue fake appointment and posting letters to unsuspecting job seekers, in exchange for sums ranging from N500,000 to N700,000, depending on the applicants’ qualifications.
The racket came to light after some individuals staged a protest over their exclusion from the ongoing biometric verification exercise for newly engaged teachers. It was later discovered that many of them had presented forged employment documents.
In a statement on Sunday, the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, clarified that the protesters were not part of the more than 2,000 teachers legitimately recruited and deployed across the state.
“The attention of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has been drawn to a protest by individuals claiming to have been sidelined in the SUBEB recruitment process. For the avoidance of doubt, those protesters were not genuine employees but victims of fraud who presented fake letters after paying money to scammers,” Adeniyan stated.
He added that disciplinary action had already been taken against the indicted officials, while further investigations were ongoing to unravel the extent of the fraud and identify more collaborators.
The government urged members of the public to be wary of job racketeers, assuring that legitimate recruitment processes remain transparent and merit-driven.
