A senior member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Shamsideen Adio, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly beating a dispatch rider to death on Lagos Island.

The incident occurred on Wednesday at Tapa Street, following a heated argument after the rider was accused of scratching Adio’s vehicle.

Eyewitnesses said the quarrel turned violent when Adio, reportedly assisted by some of his colleagues, launched a brutal attack on the victim, who collapsed after receiving several blows.

The rider was said to have died from the injuries sustained.

Journalist Chris Nwandu, who shared a video of the incident on social media, alleged that Adio was notorious for unleashing violence on transport operators in the area. He claimed that only days earlier, the suspect had assaulted a tricycle operator who ended up in the hospital.

A police source confirmed the arrest, saying:
“The victim died as a result of the beating. The suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further interrogation.”

However, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, could not be reached for an official reaction as of press time.
