The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) on Tuesday announced the suspension of its nationwide strike after reaching an agreement with the management of Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals.
The strike, which paralysed fuel distribution in several states, was triggered by allegations that the Dangote Group denied its employees the right to join recognised labour unions. The industrial action had forced many filling stations to shut their gates, leaving motorists stranded.
Following a marathon conciliation meeting in Abuja convened by the Minister of Labour, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, both parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that paved the way for peace.
The agreement provides that workers of Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals are free to unionise in line with labour laws. It was also resolved that the process of unionisation would commence immediately and be concluded within two weeks—between September 9 and 22, 2025.
Part of the MoU also states that no employee will face victimisation as a result of the strike notice, and the company will not create or sponsor an alternative union.
Confirming the development, NUPENG leadership said the decision to suspend the strike was in the interest of Nigerians, stressing that the union would closely monitor compliance with the agreement.
