The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has issued a public health advisory in response to the latest outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In a statement released at the weekend, the agency confirmed that no Ebola case has been reported in Nigeria but assured that it is closely monitoring developments across the border to ensure swift detection and rapid response should the virus pose any threat to the country.
The NCDC advised Nigerians to adopt precautionary measures, including:
Frequent handwashing with soap under running water.
Avoiding direct contact with persons displaying symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, or unexplained bleeding.
Shunning the consumption of bushmeat.
Ensuring all animal products are thoroughly cooked before consumption.
Healthcare workers were further urged to maintain strict infection prevention protocols and make use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling patients, to prevent exposure and transmission.
The agency also appealed to Nigerians with recent travel history to affected regions who develop symptoms suggestive of Ebola to immediately call the NCDC hotline (6232) or contact their respective State Ministries of Health.
