AAC accuses governor of mortgaging future, questions motive
The African Action Congress (AAC) has berated Governor Seyi Makinde over the Oyo State House of Assembly’s approval of a fresh ₦300 billion loan, describing it as another step towards plunging the state deeper into unsustainable debt.
The controversy began after an All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker representing Saki West raised alarm over the sudden recall of legislators from recess to approve the facility.
AAC, in its reaction, said the development exposed the financial mismanagement of the current administration. It wondered why a governor who had openly declared that no new projects would commence until 2027 was now seeking such a huge loan.
“What is the purpose of this money if not tied to personal political ambitions? Oyo people deserve clarity, not hidden agendas,” the party queried.
The opposition party also alleged that despite Oyo’s healthy inflow of federal allocations and internally generated revenue, local governments continue to receive meagre sums — often less than ₦100 million monthly. It accused the governor of resisting financial autonomy for councils while selling public assets and converting lands across Ibadan.
“In terms of infrastructure, Oyo should be far ahead, yet what we see are surface-level road patchings while inner roads remain deplorable,” AAC lamented.
The party, however, did not spare the APC lawmakers, accusing them of hypocrisy. It recalled that some of those now criticising Makinde supported previous attempts to curb citizens’ rights to public assembly.
According to AAC, both PDP and APC have failed the people of Oyo, leaving its platform as the only viable alternative.
“We remain the true people’s party, uncompromising in values and committed to ending the cycle of debt and exploitation,” the statement declared.
