Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to bring the Super Eagles’ international matches to Ibadan, insisting that the move would boost the state’s growing sports economy.
The governor made the call on Saturday while declaring open the 2025 Annual General Assembly of the NFF, which held in Ibadan.
Makinde stressed that football has always served as a binding force for Nigerians, cutting across political, ethnic, and religious divides. He said Oyo State, under his leadership, has invested heavily in sports infrastructure and is ready to host high-profile fixtures.
“Oyo State, particularly Ibadan, is ready to host top-tier events, including Super Eagles matches. We have the facilities, and I pledge full government support to make it successful,” the governor assured.
He commended the NFF leadership and the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) board for their reform efforts, especially in raising officiating standards and improving the overall organisation of the league.
Makinde’s appeal comes at a time when football stakeholders continue to push for wider spread of international matches beyond Lagos and Abuja, with many states now developing facilities that meet international standards.
