A café operator in Lagos has been accused of defrauding an admission seeker of N500,000 under the pretext of securing her admission into the Lagos State College of Health Technology (LASCOHET).
The institution, in a statement issued on Sunday, warned the public against falling victim to such fraudulent schemes.
According to a petition addressed to the Provost of LASCOHET, Prof. Raheem Akewushola, the victim, who applied to study Health Assistant, alleged that the suspect demanded N1.5 million for the admission process. She reportedly paid N500,000 upfront but neither gained admission nor received a refund.
When the promised admission failed, the café operator allegedly told her she would still get a certificate without attending classes. Alarmed by the suspicious offer, the applicant requested a refund but was instead threatened into silence.
During interrogation by the college management, the suspect reportedly admitted to the offence but claimed the money was for a body he referred to as “CIMB,” for which he claimed to act as a liaison. However, he could not explain the meaning of the acronym.
The Provost disclosed that stamp pads of different institutions were recovered from the suspect’s shop, adding that investigations are still ongoing.
Prof. Akewushola reiterated that the suspect is neither an employee nor an agent of LASCOHET, cautioning the public to avoid unauthorised dealings.
“Anyone who engages with him does so at their own risk,” he said.
