The Kwara State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers has expressed frustration over the non-payment of Teachers’ Specific Allowances, accusing the state government of maintaining silence on the matter.
In a statement jointly signed by the state Chairman, Comrade Yusuf Wahab Agboola, and the Deputy Secretary-General, Mike Modesty, the union lamented that despite several engagements, the government had yet to settle the 27.5 per cent and 21 per cent allowances owed to teachers.
The NUT said the situation had left teachers demoralised, stressing that welfare issues must be prioritised to boost school productivity.
Following a stakeholders’ meeting in Ilorin on Tuesday, the union resolved that before taking drastic steps such as issuing an ultimatum or embarking on industrial action, teachers across the state would dedicate a day to fasting and prayers for divine intervention.
The statement, however, acknowledged the state government’s approval of financial backing for the 2024 TESCOM promotion exercise, but insisted that outstanding allowances must not be ignored.
The union appealed to its members to remain calm and await further directives from the leadership while efforts to resolve the matter continue.
