The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Kwara State Chapter, strongly condemns in its entirety the barbaric attack unleashed on Oke-Ode community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, which claimed the lives of innocent vigilantes, hunters, and residents in the early hours of today, Sunday, September 28, 2025.
This gruesome incident is not only a tragedy to the affected families and the Oke-Ode community, but also a serious affront to the peace, safety, and dignity of lives that every government is constitutionally obligated to protect.
The rising spate of banditry, kidnappings, and violent crimes across the state has reached an alarming dimension that calls for urgent, coordinated, and decisive action.
We urge the Kwara State Government, elected political office holders representing Kwara South Senatorial District, Ifelodun Local Government, and other stakeholders to rise beyond rhetoric and immediately put in place proactive and people-centered security measures.
Such steps must include stronger collaboration with security agencies, proper equipping and motivation of community vigilantes, deployment of modern surveillance technology, and provision of adequate support to victims and their families.
It is unacceptable for our communities to be left vulnerable while criminals operate with impunity. We call on security formations to intensify intelligence gathering, swift response mechanisms, and visible presence in rural areas, which are fast becoming soft targets.
CDHR Kwara Chapter stands in solidarity with the people of Oke-Ode in this moment of grief, and we demand justice for the slain as well as freedom for all abducted persons.
We reiterate that security is a fundamental human right, and any government that fails to safeguard it abdicates its responsibility to the people.
Enough is enough. The time for proactive action is now.
