The Kwara State House of Assembly has raised alarm over the growing menace of unregulated sperm and egg donation among young people, particularly undergraduates and in some cases, secondary school students in the state.
At its plenary session on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, the House deliberated on a motion moved by Hon. Rukayat Motunrayo Shittu, representing Owode/Onire Constituency.
The motion was co-sponsored by Hon. Abdulraheem Medinat Motunrayo (Lanwa/Ejidongari) and Hon. Odetundun Olushola (Irepodun).
Leading the debate, Hon. Shittu decried the exploitation of young persons by unlicensed clinics and agents who lure them into selling their eggs and semen for financial gain, often without parental consent or proper medical supervision.
She warned that the practice not only exposes youths to health risks but also raises grave ethical concerns.
Contributing to the debate, Ogbeni Seun Ogunniyi described the motion as timely, stressing that while sperm and egg donation could offer hope to families struggling with infertility, the absence of regulation in Kwara has made it prone to abuse.
He pointed to potential genetic complications, emotional trauma, and the erosion of parental accountability as major dangers.
He emphasized the need for proper education of students on the health and emotional consequences of unregulated donation.
He also called for stricter enforcement of laws and sanctions against facilities and agents exploiting unsuspecting youths.
After robust deliberations, the House resolved to:
1. Urge the Governor to direct the Ministry of Health to issue formal guidelines and policies regulating sperm and egg donation in the state.
2. Mandate the Ministries of Health, Communication, and Education to embark on sensitization campaigns in secondary and tertiary institutions.
3. Call on parents, guardians, and religious leaders to intensify moral guidance and openly discuss reproductive health with youths.
4. Direct its Committees on Health and Education to conduct an investigative hearing into the prevalence of unregulated sperm and egg donation and recommend further legislative measures.
The lawmakers stressed that decisive action was necessary to protect young people from exploitation and to safeguard the state’s moral and public health standards.
