Tragedy struck in Ibadan as a journalist, Mr. Ojo Peter, was killed in broad daylight by suspected armed robbers along the Molete–Oke Ado axis

Tragedy struck in Ibadan as a journalist, Mr. Ojo Peter, was killed in broad daylight by suspected armed robbers along the Molete–Oke Ado axis of the Oyo State capital.

The incident, which occurred on 18 August 2025, initially stirred confusion as some believed his death was health-related. However, his younger brother, Mr. Enahoro Peter, later clarified that the journalist was attacked over a cross bag he had on him.

According to eyewitnesses, Ojo pleaded with the assailants, insisting the bag contained no money. Despite his pleas, he was shot in the back before being dispossessed of the bag.

The deceased, who once worked with Parrot Extra and later Daily Monitor, was formally mourned by the Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), which announced his death on 7 September.

Enahoro, recounting the ordeal, said the family was contacted by the Orita Challenge Police Division after his brother’s damaged phone was recovered at the scene. “He left home in good health but never returned. To think he was gunned down simply for trying to earn a living is heartbreaking,” he lamented.

Police investigations into the case have since led to the arrest of a suspect, while another was reportedly shot dead during a confrontation with security operatives.

Confirming the development, the spokesperson of the Oyo State Police Command, CSP Adewale Osifeso, revealed that operatives intercepted two suspects around Imalefalafia. The duo, he said, were linked to a series of robberies within Ibadan.

“One of them resisted arrest and was fatally injured, while the other is now in custody,” Osifeso explained, adding that the gang had also been fingered in another shooting at Anfani Junction the same day.

He assured the public that investigations were ongoing and promised that further details would be communicated as the case unfolds.
