Former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has accused his successor, Senator Uba Sani, of masterminding Saturday’s violent attack on opposition leaders during a political gathering in the state.
The incident, which occurred at the inauguration of a transition committee jointly set up by opposition parties, degenerated into chaos as suspected political thugs invaded the venue, disrupting proceedings and leaving behind a trail of destruction. Properties were vandalised, and several participants reportedly sustained injuries.
El-Rufai, speaking on Channels Television yesterday, alleged that the Kaduna helmsman was behind the violence. The former governor said he would present evidence to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and relevant authorities to back his claims.
“I have evidence. Kaduna State Governor is behind Saturday’s attacks. I will submit the evidence to the IGP and other authorities if they care to investigate,” El-Rufai declared.
The former governor, visibly disturbed by the incident, berated the nation’s security architecture, lamenting what he described as the collapse of policing in Nigeria.
“The policing system has collapsed in Nigeria. Policemen were there, watching while opposition figures were being attacked,” he said.
The development has deepened the political tension in Kaduna, fuelling concerns about a possible escalation of hostilities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
While the state government is yet to issue an official response, analysts say the allegation marks a dangerous twist in the strained relationship between El-Rufai and his successor, with implications for the stability of the ruling political structure in Kaduna.
