Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, on Friday made a dramatic return to Port Harcourt, barely a day after President Bola Tinubu lifted the six-month emergency rule imposed on the state.
Fubara, who touched down at the Port Harcourt International Airport around 11:50 a.m., was received by a jubilant crowd of supporters who had thronged the VIP wing of the airport hours before his arrival. The atmosphere was charged with songs and chants as his loyalists celebrated what they described as the “restoration of democracy in Rivers.”
His return marks a major political moment in the state, coming just 24 hours after the Rivers State House of Assembly reconvened for the first time since the suspension of democratic activities.
However, despite the large turnout at the airport and around the Government House, Fubara did not proceed to the state’s seat of power. The development left many of his supporters waiting anxiously, with speculations rife about his next line of action.
