The football fraternity has been plunged into grief following the death of former Arsenal academy striker, Billy Vigar, who passed away on Thursday after sustaining a fatal brain injury during a match.
Vigar, 21, collapsed after a freak incident in Chichester City FC’s Isthmian League Premier Division clash with Wingate and Finchley on Saturday. Though unconfirmed by the club, eyewitnesses suggested the forward collided with a concrete wall during the game.
His devastated family confirmed he was placed in an induced coma immediately after the incident. “On Tuesday, he underwent surgery to aid his recovery. Although the operation helped, the injury was too severe, and he passed away on Thursday morning,” the family said in a statement.
Born in Worthing, Vigar rose through the ranks at Arsenal’s Hale End academy after being spotted at local side Hove Rivervale FC at the age of 14. Known for his sharp instincts in front of goal, he represented Arsenal until 2024 before stints with Derby County, Hastings United, and Eastbourne Borough.
In a heartfelt tribute, Arsenal said: “Billy will always be remembered for his significant talent, his love for the game, and the pride he took in representing our football club. He was a character cherished by teammates and coaches alike. Our deepest condolences go to the Vigar family and his many friends at this time.”
Chichester City confirmed the postponement of Saturday’s fixture against Lewes in honour of their fallen player. Fellow clubs, including Derby County, Hastings United, and Eastbourne Borough, alongside the Football Association, also paid tributes.
