No fewer than eight persons have reportedly died following an outbreak of a disease suspected to be Buruli ulcer in Malibu community, Fufore Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Felix Tangwame, who confirmed the development on Tuesday, described the situation as “deeply concerning.”
Tangwame disclosed that samples collected from patients had been sent to the National Reference Laboratory for proper investigation and confirmation.
He explained that while awaiting test results, health workers had intensified surveillance in the area to curb the possible spread of the disease.
“Some of the survivors are currently receiving specialised treatment at the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, Yola,” the commissioner said.
According to him, the state government is working in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, the World Health Organisation (WHO), and other partners to tackle the outbreak.
He added that emergency response teams had already been deployed to Malibu community, with awareness campaigns and medical supplies being rolled out to support residents.
Tangwame, however, urged residents to remain calm, assuring them that authorities were on top of the situation.
