Voter Registration Now Compulsory In Kano – Gov Yusuf

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has declared voter registration a compulsory duty for all eligible citizens in the state, stressing that political participation must go beyond civic responsibility.

The governor made the declaration on Friday while inaugurating a 36-member Committee on Voter Registration and Civic Awareness at the Government House, Kano.

Speaking through the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Faruk Umar Ibrahim, Governor Yusuf charged the committee with the responsibility of ensuring that at least 10 million voters are captured in the ongoing nationwide voter registration exercise.

“You should know that your exercise is a Herculean task that requires diligence and dedication. Your mandate is to ensure that Kano registers an additional five million voters by the end of this exercise,” Ibrahim said.

He explained that the committee’s role includes monitoring polling units across the state, ensuring that citizens collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), and liaising with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to guarantee the availability of voter cards.

“As of today, Kano is the most populous state in the federation with high political awareness,” he added. “We expect those who were earlier disenfranchised to seize this opportunity. Governor Yusuf is watching you, and it is only through voter registration that Kano will elect leaders of integrity with passion for development.”

In his response, the committee chairman and Commissioner for Information, Malam Ibrahim Waiya, pledged the team’s commitment, describing the assignment as a call to service.
