US Warns Nigerian Students: Skipping Classes Could Cost You Your Visa

The United States Mission in Nigeria has warned Nigerian students studying in the US that their visas risk revocation if they abandon their academic programmes or fail to attend classes.

In a statement posted on X on Monday, the Mission cautioned:

“If you drop out, skip classes, or leave your programme of study without informing your school, your student visa may be revoked, and you may lose eligibility for future US visas.

Always adhere to the terms of your visa and maintain your student status to avoid any issues.”

The embassy further reiterated the importance of compliance on its official website, urging F-1 and M-1 visa holders to maintain a full course load and make normal academic progress.

“Maintain a full course of study each term. If you cannot study full-time, contact your DSO immediately. You may be eligible for a reduced course load in limited circumstances,” the notice reads.

The advisory comes amid the US government’s recent tightening of visa compliance for international students. In July, the US Mission also issued a stern warning against “birth tourism”, stressing that travelling to the US primarily to give birth—so that a child can acquire citizenship—constitutes visa misuse.

According to the embassy, any applicant suspected of intending to engage in birth tourism would have their visa denied.
