Update: Olubadan-in-Council Nominates Oba Rashidi Ladoja As 44th Olubadan

The Olubadan-in-Council on Monday formally nominated High Chief Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, marking the next chapter in the city’s revered traditional succession process.

The nomination took place at the Olubadan Palace, Oke-Aremo, in the Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State. Notably, the new Olubadan was absent from the session, which was presided over by the Balogun Olubadan, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola.

Speaking after the meeting, Oba Ajibola confirmed that the council had unanimously signed the nomination, adding that the resolution would be forwarded to Governor Seyi Makinde for ratification and for the presentation of the staff of office.

“We have all signed and nominated Oba Rashidi Ladoja as the new Olubadan of Ibadanland,” Ajibola stated.
“The late Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, will be buried this week, so the coronation cannot hold immediately. His Excellency will now determine a date—be it one, two or three weeks—for the formal installation.”

The process follows the passing of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin on Monday, July 7, 2025, which triggered a 21-day mourning period in line with Ibadan’s traditional rites.

With the nomination concluded, all eyes are now on the state government to finalise arrangements for the coronation of Oba Ladoja, who becomes the latest custodian of Ibadan’s centuries-old chieftaincy heritage.
