UNIZIK Bans ‘Signing Off’ Ceremony For Graduating Students
Osun

The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, has placed an indefinite ban on the popular ‘signing off’ tradition among graduating students.

The decision was announced in a statement issued on Thursday by the Registrar of the institution, Dr. Chinenye Okeke, who said the directive takes immediate effect.

According to Okeke, the measure became necessary following repeated cases of chaos, violence, and disruption of academic activities linked to the practice.

She expressed concern over the infiltration of unauthorised individuals into the campus during the celebrations, noting that such gatherings had degenerated into unruly conduct, security threats, and damage to property.

“The University emphasises that the so-called ‘signing off’ has turned into disorderly assemblies that compromise safety. Any student caught engaging in the act will face severe disciplinary measures, including possible expulsion,” the statement read in part.

The university further warned outsiders against participating in or encouraging the banned activity, stressing that violators risk arrest and prosecution for breach of peace.

Reaffirming the institution’s commitment to safety and academic excellence, Okeke urged students to focus on their studies and promptly report any misconduct or threats to the appropriate authorities.
