A group of seven traditional drummers on Monday assumed their new roles at the Olubadan Palace in Oke-Aremo, following a farewell performance at the Alalubosa home of the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.
The relocation, authorised by the Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, marks the end of one reign and the beginning of another. The team — including Alaro the trumpeter, Onikakaki, Onisekere, Onilu, and Onirara — will now perform at the palace as preparations continue for the arrival of the Olubadan-designate, Oba Rasidi Ladoja.
Speaking with our correspondent, Chief Adeola Oloko, media aide to the Olubadan-designate, said the drummers departed Alalubosa at noon and arrived at Oke-Aremo by 1:30 p.m., where they were welcomed by Maye Olubadan, Oloye Lekan Alabi; Gbonka Olubadan, Oloye Wasiu Adeojo; Gbonka Bogun, Oloye Monsuru Abiola; and Oloye Adeola Oloko.
Oloko explained that the move, in line with Ibadan’s chieftaincy traditions, is part of the formal process leading to the enthronement of the 44th Olubadan.
Governor Seyi Makinde is expected to give final approval to Oba Ladoja’s nomination this week. The Olubadan-in-Council, led by Oba Ajibola, had endorsed his candidacy last week, with the motion moved by Oba Ajibola and seconded by Osi Olubadan, Oba Eddy Oyewole, during a palace meeting.
