The Kwara State Police Command yesterday confirmed the killing of two persons in a robbery incident that rattled residents of Rore and Arandun communities in Irepodun Local Government Area of the state.
The incident, which occurred at about 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, left a private security guard and a commercial driver dead.
Police spokesman, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said the attack was carried out by armed hoodlums who invaded the residence of a businessman, Mr Oyetoyan Dare.
According to her, the guard on duty, 40-year-old Mr Wale Ajiboye, was shot dead while attempting to resist the robbers’ entry into the compound.
In what appeared to be a spill-over assault, the same gang reportedly ambushed a vehicle transporting farm produce from neighbouring Ora in Osun State. The driver, Mr Taiye Yebi, 38, who had no prior knowledge of the robbery, was fatally shot, while a passenger sustained minor injuries.
Ejire-Adeyemi disclosed that police operatives responded swiftly to the distress call, recovering both expended and live ammunition from the scene. The corpses of the deceased have since been deposited at the hospital morgue.
The Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, has ordered a discreet investigation into the incident, assuring that intelligence-led patrols have been reinforced across the axis to prevent a recurrence.
He urged residents to remain calm, stressing that the Command will not relent in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
The tragic incident has reignited concerns over rising insecurity along highways connecting Kwara and neighbouring Osun State, with residents calling for tighter surveillance to safeguard lives and livelihoods.
