The Oyo State Government has debunked speculations that it plans to shut down the Bola Ige International Business Complex, popularly known as Gbagi Market, in Ibadan.
The government, in a statement yesterday by the Commissioner for Investment, Trade, Cooperatives and Industry, Adeniyi Adebisi, described the rumour of a purported closure today (Monday) as unfounded and mischievous.
Adebisi reassured traders, shop owners and the business community that the complex remains open, stressing that government has no intention whatsoever of disrupting commercial activities in the state’s largest trading hub.
“The Bola Ige International Business Complex remains a hub of commerce in Oyo State, and at no point did the government contemplate shutting it down,” the commissioner said.
He dismissed the speculation as the handiwork of “unscrupulous elements” seeking to incite fear and create unnecessary tension.
“Normal business activities will continue without hindrance on Monday and beyond. We urge members of the public to disregard such baseless reports,” Adebisi added.
The commissioner, however, raised concerns over certain practices in the market, particularly the alleged exploitation of petty traders by some shop owners who rent out spaces in front of their shops—sometimes measuring out portions with rulers—for personal gain.
He assured that the government was already addressing the matter in a fair and balanced manner, to protect all categories of traders and sustain a conducive atmosphere for legitimate business.
Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Olajide Okesade, also reaffirmed government’s position, noting that security agencies have been placed on alert to ensure peace at the market.
“The ministry wishes to assure all traders, customers and stakeholders that there will be no closure of the Bola Ige International Business Complex on Monday. The rumour is unfounded, and everyone should go about their business without fear,” Okesade said.
The Makinde administration, Adebisi noted, remains committed to providing an enabling environment for commerce and will not take any step that could cripple economic activities in the state.
The government appealed to the public to ignore false reports and rely only on verified information from relevant authorities.
