The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, and the Alasi of Asi, Oba Olasunkanmi Oyewale, have reconciled following a highly publicised rift triggered by a leaked audio recording.
The dispute, which stirred public tension in the Asi community, emerged after a voice note surfaced online wherein the Speaker, in a conversation believed to be with the monarch’s wife, accused Oba Oyewale of harbouring individuals allegedly responsible for an attack on him. In the recording, Egbedun issued threats against the traditional ruler, a move that prompted the Alasi to file a formal petition at the Zone XI Police Command in Osogbo, alleging threats to his life.
The leaked audio quickly went viral, leading to heightened tensions in the town. In reaction, a section of the youth in Asi staged a peaceful demonstration, alleging persecution of Egbedun, a native of the community.
Amid widespread speculation and days of silence from both parties, signs of reconciliation emerged on Thursday when the Speaker returned to Asi and was warmly received by residents. Supporters, elders, and traditional chiefs gathered to welcome him, signalling a united front.
Youth leader, Samuel Olawoyin, who received the Speaker on behalf of the community, declared the feud officially over. “As our leader rightly said, there is no crisis again in the town. The youth, elders, and the chiefs are working together now. So, we are happy today,” he said.
He further confirmed that emissaries from the palace were present at the event, stating, “The chiefs are here courtesy of our royal father, Alasi of Asi, and they are here to show that the disagreement has been resolved. We are now living in harmony.”
Addressing the crowd in Yoruba, Speaker Egbedun expressed gratitude for the show of support and called for peace across the town. “I am not fighting anybody and I am using this opportunity to beg the people of Asi not to protest or fight anyone. I appreciate the chiefs that are here today,” he stated.
Egbedun also urged residents to prioritise peace and development, and reaffirmed his support for the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke.
