The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on the media to intensify efforts in the campaign against vote buying ahead of the 2026 governorship election in Osun State.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, made the appeal on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, during a stakeholders’ engagement at the commission’s office in Osogbo.
Agboke assured that the commission was committed to ensuring that every vote counts, adding that the election would be conducted in strict compliance with the Electoral Act, 2022. He also promised to keep stakeholders informed should any changes from the National Assembly affect the exercise.
He tasked the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) to caution their political parties against hate speech during campaigns, emphasising that INEC would discharge its duties with diligence.
Expressing concern over the high number of uncollected Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in the state, the REC disclosed that Osun tops the national chart in this regard.
“Presently, the number of registered voters is 1,954,800; PVCs collected stand at 1,594,006; uncollected PVCs are 360,794. The state has 332 Registration Areas/Electoral Wards and 3,763 Polling Units,” Agboke said.
He stressed the need for increased public awareness on not just voter registration, but also PVC collection.
“I appeal to you all to continue to support INEC in delivering a credible election. INEC alone cannot ensure a peaceful and successful poll — together we can achieve the desired outcome. Your vote will count; we shall do the right thing at all times,” he assured.
Reiterating the commission’s commitment to transparency, fairness and professionalism, Agboke warned against vote buying and selling, as well as electoral violence, noting that both are punishable under the Electoral Act.
“The media must help in combating this cankerworm. Civil society must not remain silent,” he added.
