The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has issued a travel advisory urging Nigerian citizens to comply strictly with the terms of their United States visas, following concerns raised by U.S. authorities over rising cases of visa abuse.
In a statement, the NIS Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, warned that violations such as overstaying, unauthorised employment, or engaging in activities inconsistent with a visa’s purpose could result in visa cancellation, deportation, and future travel bans.
The advisory placed particular emphasis on Nigerian students in the U.S., cautioning that withdrawal from academic programmes or habitual absenteeism could lead to visa revocation.
The NIS further noted that U.S. tourist visa applications could be denied if the primary intent is to give birth in the country to secure automatic citizenship for the child.
According to the statement, the NIS is working closely with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to address these issues and to prevent Nigeria from facing stricter visa restrictions.
The service urged all travellers to act responsibly and adhere to U.S. immigration laws to safeguard Nigeria’s international travel reputation.
