A tragic incident has marred what was meant to be a moment of celebration at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, following the fatal shooting of a student during a sign-out event.
The victim, identified as Babalola Marvellous Ishola, was discovered lifeless by the roadside at approximately 5:38 p.m. on Wednesday, 6 August 2025. According to local accounts, his personal effects found at the scene aided in his identification, prompting immediate intervention by security personnel.
Confirming the incident, the Dean of Student Affairs affirmed that the deceased was a duly registered student of the university. His remains have been deposited at the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital mortuary.
The development has sparked widespread grief and condemnation within the university community, transforming what should have been a jubilant milestone into a moment of mourning.
In a swift response, the Oyo State Police Command deployed its Monitoring Unit, which subsequently apprehended 16 individuals suspected to be connected to the shooting. The police have launched a full-scale investigation to determine the circumstances and motive behind the killing.
The Command’s spokesperson assured the public that justice would be served, stating that all those found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
Meanwhile, there have been growing calls from both students and staff for tighter security measures and more stringent oversight of end-of-programme festivities to avert similar occurrences in future.
