The Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) has sealed off eight hotels in Ilorin for operating without the requisite documentation and failing to comply with regulatory standards governing hospitality businesses in the state.
The enforcement exercise, carried out after several notifications and warnings, was led by the Head of Department for Hotels, Mr Aminullahi Taiye AbdulRahman. He disclosed that the affected establishments were given ample time to regularise their operations but persistently ignored the agency’s directives.
KWEPA’s General Manager, Mr Jide Aina, stressed that the action was in line with the Kwara State Environmental Law. He clarified that the exercise was not aimed at intimidating businesses but was a necessary step to curb environmental infractions and safeguard public health.
“This is not about targeting businesses but about ensuring that hospitality operators adhere to both local and international standards. A clean, safe and healthy environment remains a top priority for the Kwara State government,” Aina said.
He added that strict compliance within the hospitality sector would help protect residents, enhance public health, and create a conducive environment for investors and tourists.
KWEPA further reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with stakeholders in the hospitality industry to promote sustainable development and environmental responsibility across the state.
The agency urged other operators to ensure full compliance with environmental and operational regulations to avoid similar enforcement measures.
