Edo Condemns Killing of Endangered Hippopotamus in Anegbete

The Edo State Forestry Commission has condemned the killing of a hippopotamus in Anegbete community, Etsako Central Local Government Area.

The Chairman of the commission, Valentine Asuen, in a statement on Sunday, described the animal as an endangered species that could have served as a source of tourism and sustainable livelihood.

“This amphibious animal is not only an endangered species, but also a potential source of tourism, education, and sustainable livelihood for the Anegbete community, the state and nation in general,” Asuen said.

He said the loss of the endangered animal is beyond the loss of a species; but the loss of a rare opportunity.

“The Okumuzo riverside location could be developed into a tourist attraction, drawing visitors from far and wide to see these unique animals in their natural habitat, creating jobs and boosting the local economy,”Aseun said.

The commission urged the public to support wildlife conservation, report hunting of protected species, and work with government to promote eco-tourism.

“We therefore call on members of the public to join hands with Edo State Forestry Commission to preserve nature for posterity and turn our natural heritage into a source of pride, income, and sustainable growth,” the statement added.
