
A Chinese national has been arrested in Anambra State over alleged involvement in illegal mining activities.
The suspect, identified as Mr. Mu Hua Qiang, 45, a resident of Aguleri, was apprehended on Friday by operatives of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA Brigade) during a surveillance operation in the Aguleri axis.
Confirming the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed that the suspect had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for further investigation.
“The Anambra State Police Command, through its operatives attached to the SCID, Awka, on the evening of 22nd August 2025, received a suspected illegal Chinese miner from operatives of the OCHA Brigade. His statement has been voluntarily obtained, and he has been placed in lawful custody for further investigation,” Ikenga stated.
He assured that updates on the matter would be communicated in due course.
Illegal mining has remained a growing concern in Anambra State, with authorities stepping up enforcement against unregulated activities that pose both environmental and security risks.
