The Nigerian Senate will today commence public hearings on the review of the 1999 Constitution, with Lagos hosting the South-West zonal session.
Senate Leader and Chairman of the South-West Zonal Constitution Review Committee, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday. He said the hearing would provide an opportunity for citizens to engage on key national issues, including the proposed creation of 18 additional local government areas, the establishment of state police, and far-reaching electoral reforms.
To foster broad-based participation, Senator Bamidele noted that simultaneous public hearings are being held across other geopolitical zones, with the exception of the North-West. The hearing in that zone has been deferred as a mark of respect following the death of eminent Kano businessman and philanthropist, Alhaji Aminu Dantata, on Saturday.
The Lagos hearing is scheduled to span two days, and according to Bamidele, it is designed as a platform for Nigerians to contribute meaningfully to shaping the country’s governance structure through constitutional amendments.
