The Presidency has categorically dismissed reports suggesting that Muhammed Babangida, son of former military ruler, General Ibrahim Babangida (IBB), rejected his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture (BOA).
Contrary to a letter circulating online — purportedly shared by media personality Dele Momodu — indicating that Babangida declined the appointment, the Presidency has described the claim as “false and malicious.”
Presidential aide, Olusegun Dada, in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), stated unequivocally:
“Muhammed Babangida has officially accepted his appointment as Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture (BOA), expressing deep gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the trust reposed in him.”
Dada emphasised that the rejection claims were a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and tarnish the image of President Tinubu’s administration.
“We wish to clarify that Muhammed gratefully accepts the appointment, as announced by the Federal Government, and extends sincere appreciation to President Tinubu for the trust and confidence bestowed upon him,” the statement read.
The Presidency further assured that those responsible for spreading the alleged misinformation would be identified and prosecuted in line with established laws.
“We remain committed to transparency, accountability, and fostering unity. The perpetrators of these falsehoods will face thorough investigation and necessary action,” Dada added.
The statement concluded with a charge to Nigerians to seek information only from credible and verified sources.
Meanwhile, the controversial rejection letter, dated 21st July 2025 and attributed to Muhammed Babangida, was circulated by Dele Momodu on his social media platforms. The letter cited “personal and professional considerations” for allegedly turning down the appointment.
Part of the letter read:
“After careful reflection and consultation, I have decided, with utmost respect, to decline the appointment… This decision stems from a convergence of personal and professional considerations, which, at this time, would not allow me to serve with the level of focus and commitment the position rightly demands.”
Reacting to the Presidency’s clarification, Momodu — who recently joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) — maintained his stance, branding the appointment a “Greek gift.”
Recall that Muhammed Babangida’s appointment was part of a recent set of strategic leadership roles announced by the Presidency to bolster key government institutions.
The African Democratic Congress has since criticised President Tinubu’s move, accusing the administration of attempting to curry favour in Northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
