The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, on Wednesday, visited Daura, Katsina State, to commiserate with the family of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Buhari, who died in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, was laid to rest at his Daura residence on Tuesday, July 15. His burial, which drew dignitaries from within and outside Nigeria, was led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Among other attendees were the President of Guinea Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló; Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote; former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; and the incumbent Vice President, Kashim Shettima.
Though Obi was conspicuously absent at the burial, a video surfaced on Wednesday showing him visiting Buhari’s Daura home. In the footage, he was seen in a friendly exchange with former Communications Minister, Isa Pantami, before meeting Buhari’s only son, Yusuf, to offer his condolences.
Another photograph captured Obi alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and others—who earlier visited Buhari’s graveside for prayers—seated together under a tent. The gathering was reportedly for the third-day prayer for the late former President.
Meanwhile, ex-presidential aide Reno Omokri had, on Tuesday night, criticised Obi for his absence at the burial. Taking to his official X handle, Omokri accused the former Anambra State Governor of showing disloyalty to the North.
“President Bola Tinubu was in Daura from beginning to end, showing his personal devotion to General Muhammadu Buhari and his commitment to the North. Arewa, remember who was not there!” Omokri wrote.

He further referenced Obi’s past remarks about General Yakubu Gowon and IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, suggesting Obi harbours sentiments not aligned with northern interests.
Omokri concluded by urging Nigerians to ensure that, come 2027, the country elects a “truly Nigerian” President, not a “pretender whose true allegiance lies elsewhere.”
