A wave of dissent has trailed the federal government’s decision to rename the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) as Muhammadu Buhari University.
Alumni, students, and concerned stakeholders have mounted pressure on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reverse the move.
In a widely circulated open letter across traditional and social media, the stakeholders acknowledged the contributions of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari but warned that renaming the institution would erode an identity nurtured over four decades.
Describing UNIMAID as “a symbol of resilience, academic distinction, and regional pride,” the petitioners — led by Opeyemi Olatinwo — underscored the university’s unwavering commitment during the Boko Haram insurgency, when it remained operational amid severe security challenges.
“UNIMAID is more than a name; it is a brand — a beacon of hope for the Northeast,” the petition stated, warning that the renaming could strip the institution of its “emotional and historical significance.”
Endorsed by thousands, including students and prominent alumni, the petition argued that the decision did not reflect the sentiments of core stakeholders nor the broader Nigerian populace.
While expressing due respect for Buhari’s legacy, the group suggested alternative avenues for commemoration — such as renaming the Federal University of Transportation in Daura, Buhari’s hometown, or the Nigerian Army University in Biu, institutions they believe better align with his military and leadership profile.
“This is not a political agitation but a sincere plea for continuity — to preserve a name that has weathered conflict and moulded generations of leaders,” the petition emphasised.
As of Friday, the online appeal had attracted over 1,500 new signatures, gaining considerable traction.
Many petitioners stressed the necessity of inclusive consultation on matters bearing national and cultural significance.
Supporters of the university’s original name remain hopeful that President Tinubu will act with fairness and sensitivity, safeguarding UNIMAID’s legacy while finding fitting ways to honour Buhari.
