Tragedy struck in Osun State as a 35-year-old operative of the Amotekun Corps, Peter Samuel Tope, was allegedly killed following a brutal attack reportedly carried out by a recently recruited Nigerian Army personnel.
The incident occurred on Saturday, 26 July 2025, in Ijeda-Ijesa, Oriade Local Government Area of the state.
In a statement released on Sunday by the Public Relations Officer of the Osun Amotekun Corps, Yusuf Idowu Abass, the Corps Commander, Dr Isaac Omoyele, confirmed the details of the fatal encounter.
According to the statement, the suspect, identified as Opejobi Fiyinfoluwa, approached the Amotekun station in Ijebu-Jesa wearing military camouflage and issued threatening remarks against the corps personnel.
“Fiyinfoluwa openly declared that one of his motivations for joining the army was to ‘deal decisively with Amotekun officers,’” the statement read.
Eyewitnesses reported that shortly after his arrival, the suspect, along with a group of unidentified individuals, intercepted Officer Tope, who was riding a motorcycle. Without provocation, they launched a vicious assault. Fiyinfoluwa allegedly struck the victim on the head with a blunt object, causing severe head trauma.
The attack reportedly lasted for approximately 20 minutes, during which no assistance was rendered. The assailants fled the scene immediately, with Fiyinfoluwa escaping on a commercial motorcycle.
Amotekun officers arrived shortly after, rushing the critically injured officer to Wesley Hospital in Ilesa. The matter was also promptly reported to the Divisional Police Headquarters in Ijebu-Jesa and the Commanding Officer at the Engineering Cantonment in Ede, Lt. Col. Yunusa Isyaku.
Despite efforts by medical personnel, Officer Tope succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Sunday, 27 July. His death has plunged both the Amotekun Corps and his local community into mourning.
Describing the attack as “senseless and despicable,” Commander Omoyele assured the public that the Corps is fully cooperating with both the police and military authorities to ensure that justice is served.
He further confirmed that investigations are currently underway and promised that additional details would be released as they emerge.
