Oborevwori Defends Multibillion-Naira Flyover Projects In Delta

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has defended the ongoing multibillion-naira flyover and road expansion projects in Warri and Effurun, describing them as strategic investments critical to the state’s long-term infrastructure and economic development.

The governor’s response follows recent criticism from a former Chairman of Ethiope West Local Government and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Chief Wilson Omene, who labelled the projects as “ill-informed and misleading.”

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori dismissed the allegations, asserting that the infrastructure projects are targeted at decongesting traffic in the twin cities and enhancing urban mobility.

“The flyovers, road expansions, and sleepway interchange are not cosmetic endeavours,” Oborevwori stated. “They are long-term infrastructural investments aimed at improving urban mobility, facilitating ease of doing business, and stimulating economic growth in Delta State.”

He further argued that Warri and Effurun serve as gateway cities connecting critical economic assets, including ports, industries, and the hinterland. According to him, these projects are already unlocking commercial potential and attracting private-sector participation.

“Perhaps, Chief Wilson Omene may need to revisit the meaning of an ‘enabling business environment,’” the statement noted pointedly.

Governor Oborevwori stressed that the Warri-Effurun corridor serves a growing population and plays a central role in the state’s economic ecosystem. He asserted that only individuals disconnected from modern urban planning principles would fail to appreciate the projects’ broader significance.

Responding to Omene’s suggestion that funds should have been channelled into building industries in Delta Central instead, the governor described the comment as “sectional and myopic.”

“Delta State is larger than any single senatorial district,” the statement said. “The M.O.R.E Agenda—Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security—is being implemented equitably across Delta North, Central, and South. No part of the state has been left behind.”

On the recent political realignment, Ahon clarified that the governor’s defection to the APC was the outcome of extensive consultations with stakeholders across the state. He explained that the move was designed to attract greater federal support and consolidate development efforts.

“Governor Oborevwori’s alignment with the APC is not a personal gambit but a calculated step to enhance synergy with the Federal Government and deliver more democratic dividends to the people of Delta,” Ahon stated.

He accused Omene of playing into the hands of political elements threatened by the governor’s rising profile, describing the former council chairman’s remarks as part of a coordinated smear campaign.

Ahon concluded by urging critics to engage in issue-based discourse rooted in facts and national interest.

“Constructive criticism is not only welcome but necessary for progress,” he said. “However, it must be founded on truth and a sincere desire to move Delta forward—not on divisive rhetoric or outdated political calculations.”
