The Abia State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has resolved to intensify its fight against quackery and the impersonation of journalists in the state, in strict compliance with directives from its National Secretariat.
Rising from its monthly congress, the Union declared that any individual found practising journalism without proper accreditation, as stipulated by the Nigeria Press Council Act, will be subjected to full legal action upon arrest.
This position was outlined in a communiqué signed by the State Chairman, Comrade Chidi Asonye, and the Secretary, Comrade Ikechukwu Onuegbu.
The NUJ further urged the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) and residents to clear blocked drainages to avert flooding during the rainy season.
Additionally, the congress advised the state government to install speed breakers and construct a roundabout at Sign Board Junction along the Umuahia–Uzuakoli Road to curb the alarming rate of fatal accidents in the area. Tricycle operators were also cautioned against reckless driving.
On labour matters, the NUJ called on the state government to expedite action on the pending promotion of civil servants, lamenting that many have been stagnated for over six years.
The union also raised concerns about alleged sharp practices among some revenue officers, who reportedly collect cash payments from defaulting shop owners without issuing receipts, contrary to the state’s approved banking procedures.
While commending the government for launching integrated solar power and public water rehabilitation projects aimed at enhancing public health and hygiene, the journalists called for stringent measures to safeguard these facilities against vandalism.
The congress further applauded the completion of the Umuochiala Road, leading to the Abia State Medical City in Mbaasaa, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.
In conclusion, the Union urged Governor Alex Otti to personally monitor the Ministry of Finance and other MDAs over allegations of unauthorised salary deductions, non-payment of the new minimum wage, stoppage of salaries, and underpayment of workers.
