In what has been described as a victory for justice and the collective power of student advocacy, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has successfully resolved the long-standing academic dispute involving Comrade Jamiu Owodunni Basola, a Civil Engineering graduate of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA).
The case, which had lingered for months, stemmed from the alleged invalidation of Comrade Basola’s admission by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), reportedly flagging it as “fake” after five years of study. The controversy had threatened his future prospects, including eligibility for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Following sustained pressure from NANS, particularly its Southwest Zone D, and an open letter directed to the JAMB Registrar, the national leadership of the students’ body secured a breakthrough. According to a formal statement released by the NANS National Headquarters, JAMB has now reactivated Comrade Basola’s portal and restored his name on the official matriculation list.
The intervention, credited to the decisive leadership of NANS National President, Comrade Olushola Oladoja, marks a turning point in the quest for justice. The President’s direct engagement with relevant authorities was pivotal in reversing the unjust labelling of Comrade Basola’s admission and restoring his academic standing.
“This is not just a personal victory for Comrade Basola, but a clear reaffirmation that Nigerian students will not be left to suffer unjustly in silence,” the statement read. “It is also a stern reminder to institutions that the lives and educational journeys of our students are not to be handled with levity.”
NANS also commended the Department of Civil Engineering, FUTA, for its supportive role, particularly for issuing a formal communication to JAMB in defence of its graduate.
The students’ body has pledged to continue monitoring the matter until full redress is achieved, including ensuring Comrade Basola’s mobilisation in the upcoming NYSC batch. NANS reiterated its commitment to defending the rights and dignity of Nigerian students nationwide and warned that such administrative lapses must not be repeated.
“This triumph is a symbol of what collective resistance and resolute leadership can accomplish,” said Comrade Adeyemi Samson Ajasa, NANS National PRO, who signed off the statement.
