… Students’ Body Condemns New U.S. Single-Entry Rule as Unfair, Restrictive
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has expressed strong reservations over the recent announcement by the United States Embassy in Nigeria regarding the introduction of a new visa regime, which restricts Nigerian applicants to single-entry visas valid for only three months.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the student body aligned itself with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, describing the development as “unfriendly, restrictive, and counterproductive” to the long-standing bilateral ties between Nigeria and the United States.
“As the umbrella body representing millions of Nigerian students, both within and outside the country, NANS views this policy with grave concern, particularly for its adverse implications on students seeking academic, professional, and cultural opportunities in the U.S.,” the statement read in part.
NANS noted that Nigerian students have historically contributed significantly to American institutions through academic excellence, research collaboration, and cultural exchange. It warned that the new visa policy would impose additional financial and logistical hardships on students and professionals, many of whom rely on multiple-entry visas to sustain their academic and career pursuits abroad.
“The United States has long been a beacon of academic opportunity for Nigerian youths. However, this sudden imposition of restrictive visa conditions undermines the spirit of educational cooperation and mutual benefit that has existed between both nations for decades,” the association added.
NANS therefore urged the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria to revisit the decision and consider a policy review in line with international best practices, equity, and the principle of academic freedom.
The student body also called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to maintain diplomatic pressure and continue constructive engagement to ensure that Nigerian students and citizens are not subjected to discriminatory or punitive visa regimes.
“NANS remains steadfast in its mission to defend the rights and interests of Nigerian students globally. Should this policy persist, we are prepared to initiate coordinated advocacy and peaceful mobilisation to press for a more just and inclusive approach,” the statement concluded.
