LP Gives Peter Obi 48-Hour Ultimatum To Resign

The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to former presidential candidate Peter Obi, urging him to formally resign from the party following his involvement in a new political coalition.

This directive was conveyed in a statement released on Thursday and signed by the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, in Abuja.

According to Ifoh, the Labour Party under Abure’s leadership is categorically opposed to joining the coalition, describing its members as “power mongers” driven by personal ambition rather than national interest.

He warned Nigerians that the oft-repeated slogan, “A New Nigeria is Possible”, was being manipulated by individuals who represent the same old political order that has long failed the country.

“We are aware that those who mismanaged Nigeria over the years are the same individuals now forming this coalition,” Ifoh said. “Desperate, recycled politicians cannot deliver the new Nigeria.”

He further accused Peter Obi of holding a series of clandestine meetings with Labour Party members, pressuring them to defect alongside him.

“Some of our members have resisted this pressure and refused to follow him into the coalition. Labour Party remains outside the coalition and unequivocally distances itself from its agenda,” he stated.

The party made it clear that any of its members aligning with the coalition must resign within 48 hours.

“We will not tolerate divided loyalties. The Labour Party is not a haven for those running parallel agendas. Members cannot be in Labour Party by day and in coalition by night,” Ifoh declared.

He maintained that Nigeria’s youth, who represent nearly 70 percent of the population, are disillusioned with the dominance of the old political elite.

“The dream of a new Nigeria cannot be realised through opportunistic alliances with the very forces that have long held the nation back. That vision remains the mandate of the Labour Party,” he asserted.

Ifoh concluded by urging members to remain loyal and committed to preserving the integrity and structure of the Labour Party in anticipation of future electoral contests.
