The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed receipt of 129 applications from various associations seeking registration as political parties.
This development was disclosed following the Commission’s weekly meeting held on Thursday, 10th July 2025.
In a statement signed by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, INEC noted that seven additional applications were received in the past week, raising the cumulative number to 129.
“At its regular weekly meeting held today, Thursday 10th July 2025, the Commission received further updates on additional requests from associations seeking registration as political parties. Since last week, seven more applications have been received, bringing the total number so far to 129. All the requests are being processed,” the statement read.
In a related development, the Commission announced the rollout of a digital platform aimed at automating and enhancing the political party registration process.
The new system, introduced under the Party Financial Reporting and Auditing System (PFRAS), is expected to improve transparency, reduce bottlenecks, and fast-track registration procedures. Final testing of the platform, according to Olumekun, is scheduled for completion within the next week.
