The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, has reflected on a personal encounter with the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, recalling the ex-leader’s heartfelt appeal for the welfare of the poor.
Speaking to reporters during the Third Day Prayers in honour of the late Nigerian leader, Obi described Buhari as a man defined by his genuine concern for the downtrodden.
“I had the opportunity of meeting the late Muhammadu Buhari while campaigning, and I still remember his words: ‘Please care for poor Nigerians.’ That remains with me. I believe he did his best within his capacity,” Obi stated.
Highlighting the lesson leaders must take from Buhari’s life, Obi said, “We must learn to serve our country selflessly, knowing that a day will come when we shall all be called back by our creator.”
Obi further noted that Buhari’s unwavering advocacy for the poor epitomised a life marked by simplicity and service.
Vanguard reports that President Bola Tinubu, alongside other dignitaries, received Buhari’s remains at Katsina International Airport before proceeding to Daura for a state burial.
Buhari passed away on Sunday in a London hospital after a brief illness. His burial, conducted according to Islamic rites, drew thousands of mourners who paid their last respects in Daura.
